Last spring, we kept finding flowers with the blooms completely gnawed off and couldn’t figure out what was helping itself to the garden. Then one day, we discovered the culprit—a tiny fawn that had begun visiting our backyard. Before long, its mother trusted us enough to leave it there while she wandered off to feed. We watched from a distance, took lots of photos, and even waited a while before repairing the garden fence so the visitor could come and go.
That experience inspired my painting, The Culprit, and this design grew from that original artwork.
The curious little fawn is surrounded by flowers with a few blooms completely missing, others only half eaten, and one flower petal peeking out from the corner of its mouth.
